It's important to have your air conditioner serviced by a professional every year so worn parts can be replaced and so the unit can be cleaned. A dirty air conditioner can't operate efficiently, and dirt on the coils may even cause the AC to ice over. If the environment around your home is dusty or if you have a lot of trees near the AC, then you may need to clean it more often than once a year.

Ah, yes, appliance maintenance! It is always a tedious thing when you own your own home and you want to make sure everything keeps running. However, no one ever said you had to do the maintenance yourself. It might be a little more expensive to have a contractor/technician come out to do the maintenance for you, but sometimes it is so worth the extra cost. For example, if you know that your air conditioner currently needs AC maintenance, you only have to make and pay for one service call when you have all of the following checked and maintained at the same time.
