Do Not Miss These Warning Signs Of A Failing Heating System

Herbert Franklin

One of the worst things that can happen to anyone is enduring a cold night because of a damaged furnace. Sadly, this is a common phenomenon in many homes as people neglect this vital appliance until it's too late. So if you want to avoid any surprises, ensure that your furnace is in working condition through timely heating repair services. Additionally, you should be alert and watch out for the following silent furnace killers.

1. Your Furnace Stops During Operation

A furnace that behaves like this is inefficient and annoying. When your heating device displays such behaviors, the fan motors are not making a complete cycle because they are possibly damaged. Alternatively, the problem could be coming from the heat sensors if they are too dirty. Therefore, the best thing to do is look for heating repair services before the issue escalates.

2. The Burner Is Producing a Different-Colored Flame

For those using a furnace that depends on natural gas as the primary source of power, you have to check the frame's color from time to time. If the furnace does not have peepholes, you can open the service door to check the burner.

Naturally, clean gas has a blue flame, so if it seems yellow, the burner is likely dirty and should be cleaned. Apart from the dirt, the yellow flame could also mean the heating machine is not working at its optimum levels and that the carbon monoxide produced lacks a proper vent.

3. The Flue Is Rusty

Another dangerous sign you should watch out for is a rusty flue located at the top or behind the furnace. Its main job is to eliminate all harmful gases such as carbon monoxide produced by the heating system from your home. So if you notice any signs of rusting, have it repaired right away.

Ideally, the rust causes the pipes to wear out, causing inefficiencies when venting the dangerous gases from your home. If these gases seep into your home, they might adversely affect your health and cause headaches and dizziness.

4. Your Electric Bills Are High

When your electric bills start shooting up, it's likely that one or a few appliances need repairs. For example, a faulty furnace is notorious for hiking electric bills due to dirty filters that prevent smooth airflow. In turn, your furnace will have to push itself to maintain the temperatures at the required levels. So if you notice an increase in your power bills, call a heating repair company right away.

Unless you are keen when inspecting your furnace, you might miss some of these warning signs. However, you can always consult a heating repair professional if you are unsure what to check.
